Round two - Scotty vs Jaton

Posted on Mon Mar 26th, 2018 @ 12:55am by Commander Bertrand Cuprum & Lieutenant Jaton Alyl & Lieutenant JG Scotty Kayne

Mission: Of Machines and Men

Scotty and Jaton became aware of their surroundings again, the recent combats having passed before them in some coma-like state.

"Thank you, contestants," The woman spoke to them. "You are progressing to round 2. Only one of you may pass to round 3, however..."

Again the shift in focus, and now Scotty and Jaton were in the arena on opposite sides.

A voice boomed over the arena, "Ladies and gentlemen, and other viewers. I present to you Round two PVP Combatants 1338543 and 1338544, Lieutenant Jaton Alyl versus Lieutenant Junior Grade Scotty Kayne! Only one can continue to round 3! Place your wagers now!"

"Oh, you gotta be kidding me." Scotty said, looking over at Jaton "May the best man win."

Jaton nodded and smiled, crossing the arena to shake Scotty's hand.

Scotty crossed the arena, shook Jaton's hand, and returned to his side of the arena, removing his jacket and rolling up his sleeves.

Jaton exhaled in a short, sharp breath. He considered Scotty to be a friend of his, and this wouldn't be easy for him. But he'd do his best.

He removed his jacket as well, and took a few steps forward, before settling into a ready stance from Baguazhang. He knew of the martial arts he'd learned at Starfleet, this one would serve him best.

"Alright, here we go." Scotty said, and then he lunged at Jaton.

Jaton quickly sidestepped Scotty as he came towards him, leaving Scotty off balance. Jaton took up a position familiar to anyone who had studied Baguazhang, behind Scotty, and moving around a circle to make sure he could never land a solid hit.

Scotty then pulled his phaser, set to stun, then fired a few shots.

Jaton ducked and rolled out of the way. He was doing his best to stay behind Scotty, but he was catching on. Jaton harrumphed.

“So much for a gentlemanly fight,” he said. He then took out his own phaser and lay down some covering fire as he dashed for cover. He knew Scotty was the better marksman, so he needed to come up with another plan.

*gentlemanly?* Scotty thought to himself, then fired at the cover Jaton was hiding in. "Can't we just settle this over a pint?" Scotty said, as he kept firing.

Jaton chuckled a bit as he hunched behind his cover.

“I mean, can we?” Jaton asked, looking up towards wherever the announcer’s voice came from.

As he waited for an answer, he took his tricorder out and began to type away. He had no idea if this would work, but it was worth a try.

"I mean, I don't see why not," looking for the announcer as well, There had to be a way to stop all this madness. he then pulled his tricorder and sent a coded message directly to Jaton's Tricorder it read "Think we can shut down this arena or the announcer somehow?"

The announcer's voice spoke out, "Viewers will be aware that combatants may only use those tools that they brought with them into the arena, no additional supplies are permitted. Sorry, contestants, no 'Pints'."

"Well, guess that answers that." Scotty said.

“Unfortunately,” Jaton replied. When Scotty’s message came up on his tricorder, Jaton opened it. He quickly tapped out his reply. “Something tells me that won’t be possible, much as I wish it were.”

He then closed it out and continued running the program he was creating on the tricorder. As he pressed the final command for the five second delay, Jaton could hear Scotty’s phaser begin to beep rather urgently, increasing in pitch and speed with each passing second.

"Damn!" Scotty exclaimed, then threw his phaser at Jaton's position.

Jaton had seen this possibility coming and quickly moved away from the phaser’s trajectory. The phaser clacked onto where he had been a second ago, and exploded. Jaton looked away, but still felt the heat on his face. He came out from hiding, holding his phaser and tricorder above his head. He then threw them to the ground.

“Let’s make this a fair fight,” he said.

"Fine by me," he said. He then raised his fists

Jaton nodded and settled back into his Baguazhang stance, ready for whatever Scotty had for him.

“Let’s not drag this out,” he said. “First to draw blood wins?”

"Seems reasonable," he said, then, (in traditional Captain Kirk Style) attempted to drop-kick Jaton

Jaton side-stepped the attempt and countered, aiming an open-palm blow to Scotty's ribs.

Scotty fell down, clenching his ribs, then pulled Jaton's feet out from under him, and dealt a nice blow to his side.

Jaton fell with a thud and let out a grunt at Scotty's blow. He knew if he stayed down, he'd lose. He got back up and reassumed his stance, allowing Scotty to do the same.

Scotty came up to a kneel, then went for a gut shot.

Jaton batted the punch away and motioned for Scotty to get up. "Let's have no cheap shots," he teased. "We're both gentlemen here."

"Well I had to try," he said, as he stood, then went in for a right hook.

"I suppose so," Jaton replied with a smile. He just managed to block the right hook in time and countered with a straight punch to the nose.

Scotty's face shot up, and he staggered back a bit, and rubbed his nose, luckily, he had had been in enough fights, that his nose wasn't bleeding. Yet. He went back to his defensive posture, and began to circle Jaton.

Jaton was now, surprisingly, on the offensive. He took the opportunity to switch things up and took a tai chi chuan stance. He followed Scotty closely, looking for any weakness he might show. And when one presented itself, Jaton took it. He exploited the momentary opening in Scotty's defense and threw a punch towards his jaw.

Scotty dodged, the punch, grabbed the science officer's arm and threw Jaton behind him. After doing so, Scotty dove for the Phaser, he knew he'd never beat Jaton in hand to hand, he picked it up, and pointed it at Jaton "Sorry man, forgive me," and fired.

And that was it. The phaser had been set to kill. Jaton was vapourised in the blink of an eye.

Scotty then looked at the phaser, highest setting, "What have I done." he said, throwing the phaser as hard as he could, looked at the commentator. "What have I done?" he then sat down, put his hand on his forehead. "Will my real friend be ok?" he asked.

There was a shift and he was again sitting in the chair facing the real Jaton, who appeared unharmed but immobile.

"The organizers take every precaution to ensure the safety and well being of all contestants," the female android intoned. "Your opponent is unharmed and will remain in suspended stasis until the games are resolved. Congratulations, you are on to round three. Would you like to observe the other contestants?"

"I would," he said, with a sigh.

"A wise precaution," the android observed. "Stand by."
