Mission:
Commanding the Elements
Location: Engineering
Timeline: When the ship was in spacedock.
Aladdin, the dog was running to Engineering looking for the Thux. He knew he was upset with him but he needed to talk to clear the air. Of Donald's words and the Death of Lopez.
"Thux?" Aladdin called out to him as he arrived in engineering.
Said Thux was at the central 'Pool Table' finishing up some tweaks to the relay system. He'd served on this class of ship before, so he kinda knew where their stress points were. Fixing them ahead of time would make him unto a God.
Or just a damn good Engineer. When he heard Aladdin, he turned to address him. "Canine?" since apparently, today was Call People By Their Species Day.
Mickey just looked at the engineer at the pool table when he was outside. He knew he was upset. He walked towards him and looked at him no death stare na-da. He looked at him and offered his hand.
And Cor took that hand in his living hand and gave it a good shake. "What's bothering you, Mick?" the Thux said after a moment.
"I heard about what happen, what the hell did Hensley say that made you mad and why did lopez commit suicide?" Mickey rubbed his head wondering why?
"Lopez did what he did because, well hell, I don't know." Cor started, "Everyone told him that it was dangerous, but he didn't want to listen to anyone. He knew, in his heart and in his mind, that he was absolutely right. The hail seemed to disagree." Cor said, shaking his head. "He was convinced that we should all rendezvous in one central location. We should uproot from our shelter, and cross fifty clicks worth of ground in two hours to meet up with the other teams, despite not knowing their status."
"THEN, he tells me of some cockamamie tale of the tricorders all being rigged to send and receive messages, and that somehow they're better than our actual comms in the storm." another shake of the Thux's head. "He was argumentative to the point of insubordination, he was rude, and he did all of this in full view of the people that we were there to save."
A pause, as Cor drew a breath and held it for a moment. "And then Hensley raises a toast to him." Cor didn't speak so much as growled.
"That stupid son of a bitch. I know he means well. But i will have a serious talking with him. and write a report that Lopez died in the line of duty. I don't need to tarnish his family" Mickey said then changed the subject.
Mickey then pulled a seat from one of the chairs in engineering then sat down looking at the thux. "What would you be consider if i told you i am on a quest to find the long lost U.S.S Enterprise?" Mickey looked at him
Cor considered Mickey for a moment. Nice switch, human. Seeing as how that was apparently that the Thux went to a wall monitor and typed in a few commands. Searching through the astrogation database to pull up a view of...
Nothing. Empty space.
"I don't think she's lost in the way that you find her by looking, Mickey. Like all those people on Haven that we couldn't get to, like Lopez, and like Sil and Cal... she's lost in the way you only find by remembering." Cordale said. "... but to be a little more helpful about it then that, I'd start by finding her last known viable coordinates, heading, and speed. Then figure it's been, what, two centuries since the event? Map out a bubble from the last known good coordinates to about two hundred years worth of travel from that point and that'll give you your best starting point to search."
Two hundred years worth of travel is a big bubble.
"Cor." Mickey pulled up the last known coordinates of the Genesis Planet, the last known possession of the U.S.S Enterprise. "This would be are starting point. No i am not going to commandeer the ship. I am going to do it by the book. But, if i were to start there and locate the hulk. Would you consider being a part of the restoration project? Yes, i know 200 years old. But, it's been like a goal for me." He then handed him the padd of the engineering tech schematics of the old starship. "The best place is to start at the debris field. As one once said 'if you eliminate the impossible whatever remains how ever improbable must be the truth'" Mickey said as he stared at that star map.
Cordale took the PaDD and gave it a once over, "You do know that there's a good chance that the wreck was recovered and recycled, right?" he stated as he looked over the schematics. Ancient thing, really, but ancient things deserved attention. "I mean, parts are parts. As for being on the restoration project, I'd really have to consider what I'd be doing at that time. Humans have all the history and past in the world. You have entire buildings dedicated to your past, so you can always look back and say 'I want to reclaim that moment of history'. I'm a Thux. We don't have a racial history, we don't have anything to look back at. We're always looking forward. Forging our own future."
"I don't know if I can put that on hold to help rebuild something from some else's distant past. I'd have to see where I am when that day comes."
"I know, but isn't the reward worth the risk my friend?" Mickey looked at him with seriousness in his eyes
"You know, for someone with all their limbs and a preference for the Flight response to a threat, you sure like to toss around that word. Risk." the Thux chuckled. "So what's the reward, then?" he asked after running a few numbers on the Pool Table.
"Enterprise would be back, the ship herself would be in starfleet. Everyone would see her. i would also have the satisfaction knowing she's back and eliminate the genesis data for good. There's no amount of anything that would satisfy. Because, i would just have that moment. I would be OK with it. I just want to see her. It's an impossible dream i know, but dreams we dare to dream" Mickey smiled then went back on the other thing. "So, we cool now? Let's just drop that incident back on the planet I'll have Donald transferred back to the fleet so he can get more training poor choice of words he did" Mickey said and smiled but cooled off.
Cor stopped for a moment near the end and half-listened to Mickey drone about his dream. Drag a dead hulk of a dead ship halfway across space to resurrect her. Clear out the computer which probably rotted out and died ages ago.
"It must be nice to have a pleasant dream. I don't know if I'll be there for it, but I'll keep an eye on the news for when you get back." Cor said with a nod, but he couldn't meet Mickey's glance. The Thux had dreams of his own. Family, friends, a world to call his own. Or maybe just a decent night's sleep without waking up wondering why. Why them? Why not him?
"Just... let Don know that sometimes, life is more precious to some species then others. It's a story he can tell his kids." Cor said, somewhat grim in tone but nothing malicious. "Whatever that data is, it sounds pretty terrible. I'd be careful about who I told that part of your dream to. I've never heard of it, and I aced every engineering course thrown at me."
"Of course Cor." Mickey said as he began he turned to his friend before leaving. "I hope you are there" Mickey said as he left.
"Mickey" Aladdin said in short
Cordale watched Mickey leave the Engineering pit, and some of the Thux's heart went out to the poor human fool. Go chase your dream kid, he almost wanted to say. Just be prepared in case you find what you're looking for. Space wrecks become space crypts real fast.
