Mission:
Smoke and Mirrors
Location: Chief of Security's office.
Timeline: Current.
Kevin had changed from the grey of the Intelligence uniform to the black and gold of Security and now sat in his new office. The recent turn of events from his meeting with the Captain had him thinking that change could be a good thing. With that in mind he'd spoken with the CO and placed a request which had been granted, though conditionally.
Tapping his COMM badge he said "Kilbane to Karadis, can you come to the Chief of Security office please."
In the Intel office, Kardis received the message, tapped her own badge and replied "Right away Sir, is everything alright?"
"No, there's a situation that needs remedied, but we can discuss it once you arrive" Kevin replied.
"I'll be there ASAP" Karadis said, closing the link and leaving the office she was in immediately.
A few minutes later, she arrived in the Security department and made her way to the Chiefs office and pressed the button by the door.
"Come in" Kevin called from his seat behind his desk, and he watched as the doors opened and Karadis came in.
"You asked me to meet you he...." Karadis began to say, then stopped in her tracks and pointed at Kevin "Why are you wearing a Security uniform....Sir?"
Kevin tried his best to stop the laughter that was building up inside him, but a slight snigger escaped as he replied "There's been a slight change made by the Captain."
"I don't understand..." Karadis said.
"Commander Cuprum has now taken on the XO duties onboard the Victory, and the Captain has asked me to be the Commanders replacement as Chief of Security" Kevin explained.
Karadis knew there was something else different about Kevin, but at first couldn't put her finger on it, then it came to her "And he's promoted you to Lieutenant as well I see."
"That was unexpected, but I'm absolutely delighted" Kevin replied.
"Well, congratulations seem to be in order Sir" Karadis said, putting out her hand to shake Kevins.
Kevin took her hand in his and shook it enthusiastically as he said "Thank you!"
"So, who am I getting as my new boss?" Karadis asked.
Kevin sat back in his chair and offered Karadis to sit in the chair opposite him as he replied "Well, funny you should ask that."
"Why?" Karadis asked.
"Because in a sense, you are and you aren't getting a new boss" Kevin said.
A quizzical look came across Karadis' face.
"You see, I've been asked to fill the vacancy of Chief of Security, but, I in turn need a new Assistant Chief of Security" Kevin replied.
"Who do you have in mind?" Karadis asked.
"It needs to be someone reliable, trustworthy, good with discipline and who knows the ropes of Security back to front" Kevin said.
"Well, good luck to whoever that is, they'll need it, what with having to work with you!" Karadis joked.
"That's where I'm in luck, because the person I have in mind is someone I've already worked with" Kevin said.
"So, who's that then?" Karadis asked.
"You...." Kevin simply replied.
It took several moments for the idea to sink in with Karadis before she said "Me???"
"Yes" Kevin replied "Think about it, we know each other well, we've worked together for a few years now, and as much as I think you're a pain in the arse at times, you're the best NCO I've ever worked with and you keep me on the straight and narrow!"
Karadis raised her finger to say something, then promptly dropped it again before raising it again and saying "But, how can I be your Assistant Chief, I'm an NCO, surely this would raise issues if you had an officer come into the department?"
"That's true" Kevin said "and it was going to bring me onto the next subject....being improperly dressed on duty."
"I've never been improperly dressed on duty since I was a recruit!" Karadis almost shuted.
"Well, you're improperly dressed for your duty now!!!" Kevin replied in a similar tone
"How?" Karadis challenged him.
Reaching down into the open drawer in his desk, he pulled out a small square box and threw it across to Karadis saying "Because you should be wearing these" he said with a smile.
Karadis caught the box and looked at it in puzzlement.
"Open it" Kevin said.
Karadis opened it slowly to reveal two single gold pips. Her head snapped up and she looked at Kevin in wonderment "Those are officer pips Sir!" she said, pointing at the small golden circle contained within.
"That's correct" Kevin said, rising from his seat and coming round to stand in front of Shr'Nesh, "please stand up."
She shakily got to her feet, still holding the box.
Kevin took it off of her and said "Chief Warrant Officer Shr'Nesh Karadis, it's my proud duty to inform you that, as of this time and date, Captain Michaels of the USS Victory has agreed to sponsor you a field officers commission at the rank of Ensign. Further more, you're to be transferred from the Intelligence department and placed in the Security department of the afore mentioned ship and you're to take on the duties of Assistant Chief of Security, congratulations!" and with that he removed the CWO insignia, replaced it with the Ensign pips on both sides of her collar and put out his hand to shake hers.
"I...don't know what to say Sir...and that's really a first" Kardis replied, absolutely flabbergasted at what had just happened.
"Thank you would be sufficient 'Ensign'" Kevin said "Oh, and one other thing, best have the correct uniform on eh, Securities black and Gold so you should go and change" he winked.
"Thank you Sir" Karadis said with broad smile on her face.
"I wouldn't thank me just yet, you've a lot of training to go through before it's even considered to be a permanent commission" Kevin said "Some of it will be with me, some of it with other trainers on the ship and yet more through COMM's with Starfleet Academy."
Karadis' couldn't be phased, she continued to smile as she replied "I'll try my very best Sir, and if you'll excuse me for a few minutes, I'll go and change into the correct uniform."
Kevin watched her salute, about turn and march out of the room. He was immensely proud of Shr'Nesh, and he believed that this chance for her to become and officer was well deserved. Yes, there would be bumps along the way, after all, coming out of the NCO ranks into the officer ranks was a big step, and she'd need to realise that some people still resented that kind of thing. However, Kevin had confidence in her ability to rise above all that and carry on regardless.
Eliza Doolittle had arrived on the Victory........
