Lets hash it out

Mission:
The Trial of Cor Cordale
Location: Security Office - Deck 5
Timeline: Current.
AJ figured before things got to bust he needed to have a sit down with someone he hoped he would have a good working relationship with. He however knew not everyone cared for Marines and it sounded the last Marine CO did not help that image. AJ walked into the Security office looking for the Chief Kevin.
Sitting at her desk in the outer office, Ensign Karadis looked up as someone walked into Security. It was a little surprising to her to see a Marine officer, but Karadis didn't let it show on her face.
Standing up, she said "Welcome to Security Captain, how can I help you Sir?"
AJ walked up to the Ensign. "I bet you can, Ensign. I am looking for your boss, Lieutenant Kilbane" He said as he extended out his hand. "I am the new Marine boss Allen Jones."
Karadis was not used to such friendly mannerisms from Senior officers, and it took her a few seconds to realise the visiting officer had put out his hand. Taking it in her own, she gripped it firmly and shook it replying "If you give me one moment Sir, I'll just go and fin out if Lieutenant Kilbane is available."
She turned away from the desk and disappeared into the inner office space, then reappeared a minute later. Coming back to her desk she said "Lt Kilbane is free to meet you Sir. If you go through the doors behind me, turn right and his office is the second door on your right. He's left the door open and said for you to just go right in."
AJ thanked her and headed through the door. He was pretty good with directions and found his way to the office door that was open. He strode in with purpose and up to the Chief's desk. "Lieutenant Kilbane good to see you again." He said as he reached across the desk.
"And you Captain Jones" Kevin replied, half standing and shaking the Marines outstretched hand. He gestured to the seat opposite his desk as he sat back down again saying "How can I help you?"
AJ took the seat offered. "Well before we got into the thickof battle, I was told by some of my unit that under the previous Commander there was some tension between our departments. I just want to get on the same page. Man to man."
Kevin studied the Marine in front of him. It was fairly ballsy to come into his office and make a statement like that, on the other hand, at least it was honest.
"I don't go in for the 'man to man' thing Captain, it's never been my forte" Kevin replied "but I will say that your men got it partially correct when they said there was some tension with the previous Commander. It wasn't a departmental problem, Marines verses Security, it was a simple straight forward case of Rogers and I didn't see eye to eye. He was an over baring, ill tempered, gun totting, egotistical yahoo with no regard to protocol such as has been laid down by Commander Cuprum regarding our departments remits. That being said, he was a brave man and paid the ultimate price for his Marine tradition."
AJ looked at the Security chief and realized there must have been some misinterpretation of what he meant by 'man to man' He shrugged it off. "Yes it was unfortunate of his loss. He had a reputation in the core of being a super hot head. I hate to talk about the departed much so back to where we go from here." AJ paused "I think the Commander laid things out very clearly. I just want you to know that I am work with you not against you. My Marines are prepared to assist your people in any way we can."
"That's extremely heartening to hear Captain, thank you very much and of course I'd like to reciprocate that intent with my own Security department" Kevin replied.
"There is perhaps one situation I could pick your thoughts on, but first I'd like to ask you a question, and I'd like you to be completely truthful with me in your answer" he continued "What are your true thoughts about Security on this ship, as a whole?"
AJ thought for a second before answering. "I truely believe Security on this ship and any us the first lineof defense against all enemies foreign or domestic."
"Yeaaahhhh" Kevin replied, almost thoughtful in his drawn out one word reply, "that's kind of a stock answer, one that you'd give to an officer who's cross examining you. What I'm looking for are your thoughts, what do you think of Security. I mean, are we equal to your Marines, or are we poor cousins, do you see us as having the same fighting or defending capability, not equipment wise but personal wise, as you. Be honest Captain, I've heard most answers to these questions" he finished.
"I was being honest, LT. Security and Marines are the same and also different. Our goals are the same. We are two very differnet tools to be used by the Federatjon. I think there are good and bad units of each. Its all in how their leadership trains them." AJ said more passionately than he planned.
"Very true" Kevin answered, agreeing with Jones sentiment.
"I've been handed a 'proposition' by Starfleet Security" Kevin continued "And this is where I may call on your help Captain Jones. Starfleet, after considering this Jenarri situation, have come to the conclusion that they could have a shortage of personnel if this came to a long drawn out conflict. So, they've decided to create a 'second chance' scheme for some of their long term offenders who are ex-fleeters. They, that's Starfleet, want me to train up units of four or five prisoners to be hit squads. For instance, we could have an ex-Security officer, an ex-engineer, an ex-communications officer all of whom can be trained up to carry out covert missions. Their 'reward' for doing this, is that if they survive a great number of missions, they are pardoned and returned to their previous department, but at the lowest rank, they'll have to start at the bottom again. It's not a perfect solution, but at the same time, if it were me, and I faced twenty years hard labour or an opportunity to gain my freedom, gaining my freedom would win every time. Your help would be greatly appreciated if, once the units are trained up, those units could do a 'live' scenario against your Marines, see if the ex-fleeters are ready. What are your thoughts Captain?"
AJ thought for a second. "It sounds like a good way to make sure we have men able to serve. I hope the ones selected are extremely vetted and not just anyone is chosen for the project."
"It could be a case of beggars can't be choosers for the fleet if push comes to shove and we have to rely on these people to help us win the war" Kevin replied "Those who are sent to me for the training will be vetted to a degree because their profiles will already be on record. At that point, we can see to it their skills are used optimally."
"Count me in. Whatever you need from my team just let me know." AJ liked the idea.
"Absolutely Captain, and thank you agreeing to help and also for your enthusiasm, I look forward to our departments working together" Kevin said.
