Disturbing history

Mission: If I told you...
Location: Science Lab 4

The grate resisted at first but Bertrand was able to punch it open on the second try. He scanned the empty room beyond before dropping through onto the floor.

"Map says we have to go the rest of the way in the open. All clear here," he called back to his companion.

Jack dropped next too the security chief and looked around. He put a finger too his lips to indicate silence as the heavy thumb up lumbering foot steps are heard. He silently opened a near by door and crept in, waiting for his companion. He glanced at his map too see what the room he just ducked into was named and he grinned as he started too dig through his bag.

"We hit the jack pot, this is the back up science station."

Bertrand was listening at the closed door. He could sense the thing on the other side. It wasn't human anymore, just a bundle of raw aggression and hunger.

"That's good is it?" he asked watching Wade tap into the controls. "Personally, I'd prefer an armoury or transporter room."

Wade shook his head. "No, energy weapons are only minimally effective against those things, the weapon was designed to kill the host and they override the nervous system. With our energy weapons you have to do just enough to blow out the nervous system but stop just before you start disintegration or the particles will spread the virus" Jack pulled out another small PaDD and attached it into the stations main computer. "The gun i gave you is based on the old colt 1911, but the rounds are what i call rattlers, they have brief lived energy coating that allow it to pass through bone, but then the coat dissipates and the bullet fragments, sending small shards every where. Bad against armor, but good for leaving an entrance wound with no exit. It was meant for real covert ops, but we keep finding it left a traceable radiation signature so it was scrapped."

The Barman smiled "Excellent, the system did it's job." He looked to Bertrum, who was obviously confused. "The main science station continuously sends back ups of all files to the secondary in case the main station becomes unusable due to an emergency... like right now. And while the system is on lock down, i have a kinda skeleton key for software locks. If they hardware was locked, no go." He poured through the information as it downloaded into the PaDD. "Well that's a lot of science mumbo jumbo... and looks like the core project files are locked away in the main station, my guess due to the nature of the virus... but... there is a lot of mention of... oh wow... alien test subjects... and a lot of mention of a Gates and a Cosmos."

Bertrand looked around sharply, "Admiral Gates?"

Leaving the door he crossed quickly to the terminal, "I once arrested Captain Michaels for punching Admiral Gates. It seems a bit of a coincident that the Captain was hand picked for this mission if Gates is caught up in it."

He began scanning the records, "I am seeing deliveries of biological samples by the USS Cosmos, Gate's ship, but nothing of where the samples came from. I have to hope they were not sentient. Can you grab this data and take it with us? Two copies, just in case one of us doesn't... isn't able to report."

Jack started making the copies as he read further. "Yeah, I think I remember that, caught a glimpse of the report. It's part of the reason why I choose the Victory. I like a Captain who can realize that sometimes people need a good punch in the jaw," he smirked, then frowned. "Looks like some of the subjects where sentients... probably to determine if any higher brain functions still occurred after the process."

Bertrand filed away the comment about punching superior for future reference, "There is no higher function. They are just a bundle of base emotions, mostly anger and hunger."

He took one of the copies Wade had made and stuck it into his uniform pocket, "I don't need to tell you how serious a matter it is if we find support that Admiral Gates was supplying sentient minds to this station for experimentation, or that SFI were complicit in it. Are you going to have any issue with this I should know about now?"

"Yeah... no, if this Gates guy is Admiral Gates, go get him. Despite everything i just helped with i am actually retired. You asked for help and I do love a good adventure, so I came. Besides I was more spy work and investigation then R&D"

Bertrand moved back to the door. The thing on the other side had stopped walking but it didn't seem aware of them.

"Which way to the R47W lab?"

Jack looked at the map. "Ehhh... looks like we are close, but we have to go through the halls. The tubes are blocked off by welded grates. And why the hell did they change the name too R47W, When it first came out it was called Project Parasol."

Bertrand nodded and pressed the door button. The officer on the other side turned at the sound and Bertrand fired a single round to the head to drop the creature and then a round in each knee to slow it down if it was able to get up and give chase.

"Lead the way," he called to Wade, "And if we pass another replicator then a pair of silencers wouldn't go amiss."

"You really have never fired an old style fire arm have you? That is silenced."

Bert glanced down at the hand gun, "It hasn't come up that much."
